However, if someone destroys a building with a bomb, don't say that they explode' the building. You can say that someone explodes a bomb. But I never considered it a technical term, just a bit of mathematical street lingo -) I do not know if this is exactly what is meant when it's used in the context of PDE analysis. A breathing-hole (through the ice for seals etc) or a nostril ( especially on the head of a whale etc). When a bomb explodes, it bursts loudly and with great force, often causing a lot of damage. Essentially, 'blows up' indicates that something is being divided by zero.
